Pop Culture is Rife with the Best April Fools Day Fodder
It’s April 1, 2022 and the Internet has had a way of taking April fool’s Day to a whole new level, especially for popular culture geeks around the world!
In the age of digital media, day to day rumors spread virally across social media, and gossip has become fodder for fans and foes to debate hotly every day of the year. But there’s something different about April Fool’s Day because it’s what one is expected to do.
This year is no different, and some of 2022’s April Fools memes and headlines are sure to grab fans and shake them up.
DoctorWhoTV, a U.K. based BBC and Doctor Who site announce this April 1st, a complete reboot of the 60-year-old franchise starring none-other-than Spiderman’s Tom Holland, complete with excited quotes from the web-slinger.
Meme makers each year, this year as well, revel in making claims that a long awaited continuation of beloved sci-fi series Firefly is on the way. This one has been done so many times, that it’s easier to make memes about how many memes there have been than even try again.
Nothing in pop culture is off limits. From news articles to memes, it's open season on fans and social media followers. Many even use recent news as the backbone of a good prank.
This is the case in 2022, with one assertion that the DCEU's Flash, Ezra Miller, in the wake of his recent legal controversy is being replaced by the CW's Grant Gustin, who playes the role on television and is a fan favorite.
But where does this fascination with pranks come from?
Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1.
People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April fools.”
According to the popular History Channel, these pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.
Of course, as with any great tradition that has lasted for this long, it’s all a bit of humbug in good fun, so as we all attempt to navigate this day and discern what’s right and real and what’s not, good luck to you all!
